European territorial cooperation
Since 2014, regions of Ukraine bordering the EU have had the opportunity to join certain cross-border cooperation projects (in the current program period - Interreg Next Programs), as well as the interregional Danube program. In 2024, Ukraine joined the Interreg Europe, URBACT and EPSON programs. All these programs constitute European Territorial Cooperation (INTERREG), which helps to achieve even social and economic development of regions in the EU through partnership and cooperation, as well as to overcome barriers associated with the existence of borders.
The European Territorial Cooperation (Interreg) is organized under multiple strands:
- cross-border (Interreg A),
- trans-national (Interreg B),
- interregional (Interreg C),
- outermost regions’ cooperation (Interreg D)
The total budget of Interreg programs for 2021-2027 is more than 10 billion euros.
The main priority goals for the development of regions within INTERREG programs are:
A more competitive and smarter Europe (PO1);
A greener, low-carbon transition to a clean, zero-carbon economy and a sustainable Europe (PO2);
A more connected Europe (PO3);
A more social and inclusive Europe (PO4);
Europe closer to citizens (PO5)
Better public administration (PO6)
A safer and more secure Europe (PO7)
