10 years of EU/UNDP support of local development in Ukraine: summing up results

On 21 November 2017, a joint EU/UNDP project “Community Based Approach to Local Development” gathered its partners in Kyiv to summarise the results of ten year work in Ukraine. During the Final Review Meeting, the representatives of the United Nations Development Program and the Delegation of the European Union to Ukraine, representatives of the regional authorities and other international organisations discussed the achievements of the third phase of the project, that finishes on 30 November 2017, and outlined prospects for further support of the Government of Ukraine in sustainable local development.

Welcoming the participants from the management of MinRegion of Ukraine, Liliya Popova, head of the department of local self-government and territorial organisation of power, said: “We can talk about the results of our joint work in the field of local self-government. The project assists the economic development of hromadas, which includes both energy saving and water supply, healthcare, social protection, provision of administrative services and other aspects. 665 AHs have been established in Ukraine, uniting over 3 thousand hromadas and almost 6 million citizens. The micro-projects implemented through the joint efforts of the Government of Ukraine, the EU/UNDP “Community Based Approach to Local Development” project and local hromadas, improve the lives of citizens in our country.”

Summing up the results of the last three years, Mr Hendrik van Zyl, Manager of the EU/UNDP “Community Based Approach to Local Development” project, noted: “Today we are summarising the third phase of the project. Over the past three years, we have been supporting the restoration of the sector of social infrastructure, housing and communal services. However, the smiles of people are the most important achievement of the project! Warm classrooms where children are taught, well-equipped health posts where local residents can receive helathcare services, happy families who live in warm, comfortable homes and save on heating – these are the key achievements of the project.”
