Ukraine will have nine statistical macro-regions

Ukraine will provide its European partners with a revised proposal on statistical macro-regions (NUTS-1) by the end of 2025.

This was reported by Ukrainian MP Vitalii Bezgin.

‘We have entered into constructive dialogue with the State Statistics Service on this issue,’ said Vitalii Bezgin.

According to the MP, the following structure is proposed:

Macro-region 1: Sumy, Kharkiv, Chernihiv regions.

Macro-region 2: Donetsk, Luhansk regions.

Macro-region 3: Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia regions.

Macro-region 4: Mykolaiv, Odesa, Kherson regions, Crimea.

Macro-region 5: Vinnytsia, Ternopil, Khmelnytskyi regions.

Macro-region 6: Kyiv region and the city of Kyiv.

Macro-region 7: Zakarpattia, Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, Chernivtsi regions.

Macro-region 8: Volyn, Rivne, Zhytomyr regions.

Macro-region 9: Poltava, Kirovohrad, Cherkasy regions.

Vitalii Bezgin also highlighted several important points:

  • This proposal does not negate the work of the Ministry for Development of Communities and Territories of Ukraine and experts on security macro-regions as the basis for state regional policy. The Ministry is currently preparing a corresponding resolution.
  • There will be no councils or administrations at the macro-regional level. Regional councils and administrations will not lose any of their powers.
  • The possibility of establishing project offices at this level to collaborate with European programmes is under consideration. The regional development agencies could be replaced or reformed.

The Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS) is a classification system used by European countries to collect, compile and disseminate harmonised regional statistics. The NUTS-1 standard covers territories with populations ranging from 3 to 7 million. This standard is important for Ukraine in its work with the European Union's structural funds and Cohesion Fund mechanisms.
