Kovel and Saarbrücken: New international intermunicipal partnership

On July 12, the Agreement on Solidarity Partnership between the municipality of Kovel and the German city of Saarbrücken was signed.

Ihor Chaika, Mayor of Kovel, announced this on his social media page.

According to him, the municipality of Saarbrücken has been supporting Kovel since the beginning of the full-scale war, and he extended his gratitude to the mayor of the German sister city, Uwe Konradt.

“Long before the signing of the Agreement, in July 2022, Saarbrücken provided Kovel with a 320 kW generator, which has been used as a backup power supply for the Kovel Water Utility. And today, as a partner now, Saarbrücken handed over to our city a well-equipped fire truck, which we will transfer to Repair Housing and Utility Company 1. Caring residents of Saarbrücken support Ukrainians in every possible way, organising marches on the streets of the city, raising money and collecting necessary things, as well as, to the best of their abilities, providing shelter to those who need it.”

Ihor Chaika also noted that the Kovel municipality is determined to cooperate not only in matters of charitable assistance.

“We are interested in a mutual exchange of experience, innovative practices in economy, healthcare and tourism, as well as close cooperation in facilitating educational and cultural exchanges.”

Participants of the International Summit of Cities and Regions, which was held in Kyiv on April 20, bringing together municipalities from more than 50 countries, declared their readiness to join efforts to help in building a peaceful, democratic and prosperous future, to contribute to the establishment of a comprehensive, just and sustainable peace in Ukraine to ensure international security and stability of the entire world.
